Jenolan caves is a great weekend getaway. It is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive out of Sydney, a great place for picnicking, bush walking and caving experiences.
While there are many caving options on offer at Jenolan caves, those of you who are more adventurous should look into their adventure caving experiences. The plug hole cave is the recommended adventure caving starting point before, working your way through the other caving experiences. It is considered the least strenuous and gives you a feel for what caving is all about, from abseiling to squeezing into tight spaces and learning to rely on other people to help you through.
This experience runs for 2-hour and takes you through Elder Cave.
It all begins with the fit out of gear (overalls, harness, helmet and headlamp) and a safety briefing. The adventure starts with a 9 meter abseil down into the sink hole.
Traversing the cave requires you to squeeze through tight areas, these twists and squeezes get longer as your confidence grows.
As you move through the various areas of the cave the guides impart their knowledge of the cave in a humorous way. The guides also take photographs throughout the experience and they are free to download from their website shortly after the event.
The cave system is home to see interesting crystal formations and sites of historical importance. All along the way you rely on the people in front of you to show you the way. It would be a great team building exercise for businesses. You finish this tour by traveling through an S bend like that of a toilet and emerge into the Imperial cave.
Upon completion of the Plug Hole cave tour you are presented with a certificate. If you are of average fitness and you do not mind getting dirty and a little sweaty then we would recommend this tour to you in a heart beat.
